Meet the team
Madeline Wardrop

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, where you grew up and your career journey to date?

Leaving secondary school I was stuck between 3 career paths: marketing, nursing, and acting! I decided to study Marketing at Glasgow Caledonian University and I’m glad I did. At the time, social media marketing was in its infancy – and I decided that this was the career path I wanted to pursue.

After University, I interned for a company based within Entrepreneurial Spark, before joining Clyde Gateway as a Marketing Assistant. From there, the opportunity came up at Three Mobile within the social media support team – I stayed there for 5 years doing a couple of different roles from pioneering video chat to becoming a social media team manager – I even met my now husband in the process!

My next role was at City of Glasgow College where I worked as a Digital Officer for the Students’ Association, before being promoted and working within the Student Experience directorate - I think this job really defined my career. I then joined the NHS where I was responsible for producing digital campaigns for smoking cessation and weight management. I wanted to return to working in an education environment, and that’s what brought me to Strathclyde.

What is your role at the University of Strathclyde and what are your main responsibilities?

I joined the Inspire team in July 2023 as a Communications Executive. In this role, I manage all marketing and communications activities to successfully raise awareness of Strathclyde Inspire among a variety of different audiences.

This includes implementing Inspire’s marketing plan and working on projects aimed at enhancing Strathclyde Inspire’s profile both internally and externally. Currently, my projects include rebranding Inspire’s podcasts, developing key messaging for our communications activities, and implementing processes to effectively track our activity.

What are you currently excited about in your job?

One of my main objectives is to develop the Strathclyde Inspire Ambassador Programme. I’ve finalised the plan and I’m currently designing the training programme. The next step is to take this programme to the next level and broaden its reach to bring in a total of 26 staff and student Ambassadors from every department across Strathclyde. It’s exciting to lead on such a big initiative, and it’ll be great having representatives from across the University highlighting the fantastic work of Inspire.

If you could visit one place in the world next week, where would you go and why?

Definitely somewhere hot. One of my favourite holidays was when I toured Thailand and visited Anthong National Park. It was the most beautiful beach I’ve ever visited. So to answer the question, on that beach at sunset drinking a cocktail out of a coconut!

What’s your favourite food?

I have a few! Being from a French family I grew up eating a lot of French bread and pate –with fear of sounding like a stereotype, if you ever need a recommendation on where to find the best baguette in Glasgow, I’m your person!

My ultimate comfort meal is my mum’s lyonnaise potatoes – anytime I come back from a holiday I crave them, so I’m straight round to my mum's with a bag of Maris Pipers in hand.
