Strathclyde InspireCase study - Matthew McLean

Airspection is developing a robust endurance drone for inspecting remote infrastructure – particularly offshore wind turbines. The company specialises in inspecting hard-to-reach infrastructure in remote locations safely and reliably.

Traditional methods of inspecting remote infrastructure involve logistical hurdles, safety risks, and environmental impact. Airspection drones are designed to cover long distances and hover for extended periods in tough weather, eliminating the need to transport inspection teams to remote locations. It aims to empower inspection services to provide inspections that are faster, cheaper and at a dramatically lower environmental impact.

Airspection was founded by Matthew McLean after completing his degree in Aero-Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde in 2022. After discovering that offshore wind turbine inspections involve sending massive, crewed vessels into the open ocean - which burn a lot of fuel and put the crew at risk - he had the idea to launch drones from the shore. 18 months later, the team have developed a platform for shore launched offshore inspections and are making waves in the offshore energy scene. Matthew is the Managing Director of the start-up, juggling everything from tech development to sales and marketing.

Matthew first engaged with Strathclyde Inspire during his time as a student. He received guidance from our start-up advisors which he says was invaluable, as well as access to workshops, events, mentoring, and networking opportunities. He eventually secured a place on the Inspire Accelerator programme, and the initial funding received allowed him to develop a prototype. He also received support with an application for Scottish Young EDGE and went on to win a prize. Matthew later pitched for funding in the Inspire100, our bi-annual showcase event, and was successful. This funding significantly accelerated the development of Airspection, marking a crucial turning point for the venture.

Next steps for the company are getting their service to market. The aim is to be conducting paid trials by 2025, and the team is actively working on securing a first round of investment to achieve this milestone.

Making a positive impact is what motivates Matthew, whether it’s removing people from dangerous environments or helping industry to become more sustainable. To be a successful entrepreneur, he believes that prioritisation and a people-focused approach are the most important things.

It’s not about how much you do; it’s about doing the right things. Companies are built by people. Success often hinges on understanding the needs of people – those who buy your product or service, and those who contribute to your journey.
