Strathclyde Chancellor's Fellow, Government & Public Policy

I am a Chancellor’s Fellow and Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Political Science at the University of Strathclyde. After completing my Doctorate at Binghamton University, USA, I joined Strathclyde in 2020 as a Post-Doctoral Researcher for the NORFACE-funded EU-in-Action Project. Collaborating with scholars at Leiden University and the University of Mannheim, we explored how EU institutions respond to public demands in integration across policy areas. In 2023, following a successful application and selection process, I was appointed as a Chancellor’s Fellow, allowing me to further my commitment to research and teaching in the field of Computational Political Science.
As a Chancellor's Fellow, my research has focused on comparative politics, intra-party agenda setting, policy formation, and party leader survival. By leveraging quantitative methods, especially text analysis and machine learning approaches, I have contributed to the field in meaningful ways. The creation of the ParlEE data set of parliamentary speeches is a significant milestone, with broader implications for the study of political communication and the responsiveness of political elites to public demands.
The Chancellor’s Fellow program has been a cornerstone in my professional development significantly enhanced my skills, expanded my academic network, and shaping both my research and teaching. The programme’s support has been instrumental in my career development. It has offered a nurturing environment that encourages innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing me to pursue my research interests with enthusiasm and supported my personal growth as an academic. The Fellowship has supported my efforts to ground my research agenda and parlay it into public spheres through knowledge exchanges and direct engagement with policymakers. These experiences have enriched my perspective and have been integral to my development as a scholar. The Fellowship has also provided an ideal platform to become more involved with teaching, while giving me time to expand my research portfolio. Throughout my Fellowship, I received excellent support from senior colleagues who provided mentorship and guidance on both research and teaching aspects.
The University is home to world-class academics and facilities and has strong ties with industry and government actors. A major attraction for me is the University’s international ambition and its connection to a network of international strategic partners, which it actively encourages and supports. The University of Strathclyde's commitment to rewarding excellence and fostering a culture of inclusivity has significantly contributed to my success. The rewards, benefits, and supportive culture have enabled me to focus on my work, knowing that my contributions are valued and recognized.
I see values in action, especially 'people-oriented', with a huge focus on well-being. I have felt very supported by my department and enjoy working in such a welcoming multicultural environment. From the beginning, when I landed in Glasgow during the pandemic, my colleagues went above and beyond to ensure I felt safe, secure, and cared for.
In conclusion, my time as a Chancellor's Fellow has been marked by significant milestones and a deepened commitment to academic excellence. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that is dedicated to making a positive global impact through education and research. I look forward to continuing this journey and contributing to the University's mission of advancing knowledge and transforming lives.
