Professor Booth will replace Professor Stephen McArthur who was appointed as Strathclyde’s new Principal & Vice-Chancellor, with both commencing their roles on 1st September.

Distinguished career

A two-time graduate of Strathclyde, Professor Booth began his undergraduate degree in 1987, subsequently obtaining a PhD and taking up a variety of postdoctoral research posts before he was appointed as a lecturer in 2007.

An established authority on power system protection and digital energy systems, he is also the co-founder and Director of Strathclyde spin-out company Synaptec, which provides sensing technology for the electrical power, offshore renewable and transport industries.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said: “Throughout his distinguished career at Strathclyde, Campbell has proven himself to be an exceptional academic, entrepreneur and leader.

“A strong people manager, he has overseen significant growth in research income and research awards, both within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and in the Faculty of Engineering.

“He is a well-connected, internationally respected academic in the field of power system protection, control and monitoring, and his experience in founding Synaptec reflects the University’s strong focus and track record of success in commercialising its research into real-world applications.

I warmly welcome Campbell’s appointment as Executive Dean and I am confident he will continue to build on the strengths and successes of the Faculty of Engineering – Scotland’s largest – in the years to come.

Professor Booth said: “I have spent almost 40 years of my educational and professional life at the University of Strathclyde. It is a privilege for me to be appointed to lead the Faculty of Engineering.

“Engineering is central to society and has a leading role to play in tackling some of the biggest challenges of our age.

“I look forward to driving forward Strathclyde’s sector-leading approach, working in partnership with industry, academia, government and the third sectors; intensifying our focus on innovation and entrepreneurship; and helping to achieve the University’s strategic five-year plan and beyond.”
