Overview
This PhD project will work across the University of Strathclyde and the Flow Navigation Centre Plus (FNC+) in NHS Lanarkshire to study patterns in unscheduled care and develop new models of care delivery and management. The FNC+ monitor the flow of patients across sites in NHS Lanarkshire, with this project seeking to identify insights from this data in order to model and propose interventions in the healthcare system (re-)design.Eligibility
This project is suitable if you have a general interest in systems design, modelling, and health. You are encouraged to apply if you have a background in engineering, design, physics, health sciences, behavioural sciences or a related relevant discipline.

Project Details
Healthcare systems face challenges in optimising clinical workflows to deliver timely and effective patient care. One critical and often overlooked area is the design and management of flow navigation, particularly in unscheduled care. This PhD project will work across the University of Strathclyde and the Flow Navigation Centre Plus (FNC+) in NHS Lanarkshire to develop new models of care delivery and management. FNC+ has been established to collect and evaluate patient flow data throughout NHS Lanarkshire from police and ambulance emergencies to hospital bed management. From this data emerges a pattern of life for the health board with a complex interplay of environmental and NHS driven factors influencing the health system’s performance and capacity. The next phase of development for FNC+ aligns with the project goals of understanding and predicting patient flow to design a more effective system that can respond rapidly to demand. The PhD project will use an engineering systems design approach to study flow network patterns in FNC+ data, model possible pathway interventions and work with NHS Lanarkshire to enable redesign in an evolving health system. You will spend time embedded with the FNC+ team to benefit from their experience and insights, while providing a direct avenue for real-world research impact.
Further information
The Studentship is expected to start on 7 October 2025 on-site in Glasgow. The candidate will be joining the vibrant PhD Community at the University of Strathclyde in general and the Leonardo Suite at DMEM in particular. Dr Gordon McNeish will be external supervisor from NHS Lanarkshire / FNC+.
Funding details
Fees paid at Home rates for four years. MRS will pay the published Home rate for university tuition fees for the first year and reasonable increases annually thereafter.
- Student stipend: £17,539 per annum
- Research expenses: £5,000-£10,000 per annum
- Travel Allowance: £750 per annum
In addition, NHS Lanarkshire will provide an annual top-up to the student stipend of £3,000 per year for the four years of the Studentship, as well as additional necessary Research Expenses; and essential travel and accommodation expenses, including expenses incurred in connection with training placements at and visits to NHS Lanarkshire sites.
Home Students
To be eligible for a fully funded UK home studentship you must:
- Be a UK national or UK/EU dual national or non-UK national with settled status / pre-settled status / indefinite leave to remain / indefinite leave to enter / discretionary leave / EU migrant worker in the UK or non-UK national with a claim for asylum or the family member of such a person, and
- Have ordinary residence in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or British Overseas Territory, at the Point of Application, and
- Have three years residency in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, British Overseas Territory or EEA before the relevant date of application unless residency outside of the UK/ EEA has been of a temporary nature only and of a period less than six years
While there is no funding in place for opportunities marked "unfunded", there are lots of different options to help you fund postgraduate research. Visit funding your postgraduate research for links to government grants, research councils funding and more, that could be available.
