Getting startedInduction

A very warm welcome to the University of Strathclyde

The next PGR Induction will take place on 9 April , 2025 in GH515. Newly registered PGRs will be invited to join us nearer the time. Our Associate Principal, Professor Jillian MacBryde will commence Induction by welcoming all our new PGRs to the University.

The Induction provides a welcome and overview to the University, Strathclyde Doctoral School, and to key information to support you in your journey as a postgraduate researcher at Strathclyde.

We’re delighted that you’ve chosen Strathclyde to do your postgraduate research degree. You’re joining an ambitious and talented research community that makes a real difference to world leading research through the University’s commitment and drive to increase our research output.

The induction series runs twice a year, typically in April and October. It provides a comprehensive overview of everything you need to know when you start. This is the institution-wide induction event and is complimented by inductions that take place in Faculties, Departments, and Schools.

Local inductions cover things like health and safety, who to seek help from, introduction to your peers, and so on. For those PGRs who are unable to attend on the day, we have a comprehensive online induction module on Myplace that PGRs can work through at their own pace.

PowerPoint presentations from previous sessions are available on our online induction module on Myplace. The presentations provide an overview of the postgraduate journey.

In addition, we have included presentations from our key support services to help make navigating your research journey easier. Be sure to also visit our SharePoint site and the dedicated Professional Development Programme and PG Cert RPD pages for all your professional development information.

Beginning a research degree is an exciting albeit challenging time. There are a lot of things you’ll need to know. You may feel overwhelmed but our induction sessions are the best way to get all the information you need to get you started.

Aim of induction:

  • welcome you to the University
  • discover the support and resources available to you from around the University

Day one

This University-wide session is an opportunity to hear about the postgraduate researcher journey from supervisors and students. As well as welcoming you to the University, this session focuses on life as a PhD student. It considers the requirements and expectations of you and your supervisors. It's also a chance to ask questions and 'talk' to your peers.

Day two

Our second session focuses on information from our key support services, including the library and student support services, which can help to make your journey easier. You’ll also find out about the Doctoral Researchers Group and how to get involved in our wider PGR community.

Day three

This session will cover the purpose of the PG Cert RPD, planning professional development, and how to successfully complete the PG Cert RPD. The hour long session will consist of a presentation and an open Q&A.

Students in the Business School should contact their supervisor or departmental administrator to find out about their professional development requirements. An optional on-campus Q&A will follow.

Peer support programme

PGR Peer Support Programme – Our Doctoral Researchers Group coordinate a peer support programme where an experienced PGR hosts a small group of new PGRs to help make connections and get answers to the myriad of questions – we’ll tell you how to join the programme at induction.
