This information is specific to University of Strathclyde international students applying for a Student visa from outside the UK, whether to start a new course or if returning to the UK to resume their course.

What you should know

Student visa application form guidance (outside UK)

This page provides guidance on how to answer questions on the Student visa online application form for outside the UK.

These questions may differ slightly from those going through the UK Immigration: ID Check app process.

While the question order and wording of questions may differ, the information on questions here remains similar to questions through the app process. Please be aware that depending on your circumstances and how you answer questions in your application form, not all questions on this page will appear in your application.

Read the information carefully and select the option appropriate to your circumstances.

1. Start
Register an email Enter an email address that you have access. Your application decision email and correspondence about your application will be sent to this email. We would not recommend using your University email address.
2. Application
Email contact and telephone number

Provide the information as requested and appropriate to your situation.

Do you have a Fulbright, Marshall, Chevening or Commonwealth scholarship?

Select "No" unless you have a Fullbright, Marshall, Chevening or Commonwealth scholarship.

Do you have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number?

Enter your CAS number. Check your CAS number under the "CAS Details" section of your CAS if you received your CAS from Admissions.

Check that your CAS is valid at the time you apply.

Your name

Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport. If your CAS does not have the same information as your passport, this must be updated.

If your given name and family name aren't separate, click "I do not have a current passport or travel document" and then click "I do not have both a given and family name". You can enter your name here in one line.

Your passport 

Enter your details from your current passport. If you're not able to provide your current and valid passport, contact ISST.

The passport number here must be the same as on your CAS.

Your immigration status 

This question will only appear to applicants residing in a country other than their country of citizenship.

Select the answer appropriate to your situation.

Have you provided evidence of your English language ability in a previous application?

This question may not appear to applicants who are nationals of majority English-speaking countries.

Select the answer appropriate to your situation.

Are you coming to the UK to study at a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance? The University of Strathclyde is a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance. Select "Yes".
Does your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) statement indicate that your English language ability was assessed by your institution or that you are a 'gifted' student?

The University will assess your English language ability and confirm this on your CAS, if your CAS is not for a pre-sessional programme. 

If you are a student coming to the UK to resume your studies, your CAS will confirm your English language ability. In this situation, select "Yes".

Your current partner This question will only appear to applicants depending on your response to your relationship status. Provide the details as requested.
Does anyone rely on your for financial support? Consider both those travelling with you and those not travelling together with you when answering this question.
About your dependant Provide the requested details with your dependant applicant's passport.
Your parents Answer the questions about at least one of your parents. It does not matter which parent you choose first.
Do you have any family in the UK?

This includes immediate family such as: 

  • immediate family - such as spouse, civil partner, parents or children
  • grandparents or grandchildren
  • your spouse or civil partner's family
  • your child's spouse, civil partner or partner
  • your partner, if you have lived with them for 2 out of the last 3 years 

Answer as appropriate. When you select "Yes" you'll be asked for additional details.

Will you be travelling to the UK with someone who is not your partner, spouse or dependant? Answer as appropriate. If you select "Yes" you will have to provide the details of one travel companion.
Do you know where you will be staying in the UK?

If you have secured long-term accommodation and have confirmation of this, select "Yes".

You'll need to enter the address details. If you've been accepted into University of Strathclyde accommodation, please use the following address: Village Office, Lord Todd Building, 11 Weaver Street, Glasgow, G4 0NS

If you don't have long-term accommodation confirmed yet, select "No".

You'll be asked for details about your temporary accommodation after your arrival in the UK. This can include the address of your hotel, hostel or private housing or if you're staying with friends. If you're going to be living with anyone else, include their names and your relationship to them. If you know you'll be moving to long-term accommodation after your arrival and you have confirmation and information available, include these details too.

Travel history (UK) 

Select "Yes" if you've travelled to the UK in the past 10 years. Enter the number of times you've been to the UK and declare details of all your past trips to the best of your memory. If you're not sure about specific dates, enter approximate dates.

Medical treatment in the UK 

This question is asking if you've ever been given medical treatment in the UK. Examples include visits to a doctor, clinic or hospital. In these cases, select "Yes".

You will be asked more questions about whether you had to pay for treatment and for details on where you had your medical treatment and whether this was at Accident and Emergency (A&E) at a hospital or a doctor, clinic or hospital for non-emergency treatment. You will need the name of the hospital, clinic or doctor’s surgery, the address and dates when you receive(d) the medical treatment.

We realise this question appears to ask you to list every time you have received medical treatment. Please answer this question to the best of your ability. If you are not sure about specific dates, please enter approximate dates.

If you have never received medical treatment in the UK, select "No".

Leave to remain 

"Leave to remain" refers to a visa application made in the UK requesting permission to stay in the UK for a specific period.

If you've made any visa application in the UK in the past, select "Yes" and provide the application details and its outcome.

If you've not made any visa applications for leave to remain in the UK in the past 10 years, select "No".

National Insurance numbers 

Select "Yes" if you have a National Insurance number in the UK. If you've worked in the UK before, you should have a National Insurance number.

If you don't have one or you've applied for a National Insurance number but haven't received one yet, select "No". 

Public funds 

If you have never received money from the UK government or a local UK council, then the answer is likely to be "No".

If you have received public funds, you will have to answer additional questions.

You will find guidance on public funds from the UK Council for International Student Affairs.

UK visa applications 

If you've had a UK visa within the past 10 years, select "Yes" and enter the date of issue. Otherwise, select "No".

Travel to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, Switzerland or European Economic Area 

If you have been to these countries in the past 10 years, select "Yes" You will be asked additional questions about your travel. If you can't remember the exact dates of travel, include as much information to the best of your knowledge.  

If you have not been to these countries, select "No". 

World travel history  Select the answer applicable to you and provide additional details on your travel. If you can't remember the exact dates of travel, include as much information to the best of your knowledge.  
Your planned travel information  Enter your planned date of travel to the UK. Please note you can travel to the UK on the Student visa up to 30 days before your course start date.
Immigration history 

This question is asking about your experience with immigration issues in the UK or elsewhere. Select "Yes" if you've encountered problems with immigration. Select "No" if you haven't had any immigration issues.

By selecting "Yes" you'll be asked for more details about your experience. It's important to declare previous visa refusals.

Your employment history 

Read the list carefully and answer this question accurately.

If you select "Yes" select the organisations you have worked for previously. This includes paid or unpaid work. For each organisation you select, you will be requested to provide further information.

This question is not related to your CAS number.  

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) 

If your course requires ATAS clearance, you must have a valid ATAS certificate and you must enter the ATAS details in this question. Check your CAS or offer letter if you need ATAS.

You will have to upload your ATAS certificate in the evidence part of the application. Certain nationalities are exempt from the ATAS requirement and will not need an ATAS certificate.

The list of nationals exempt from ATAS are in the Immigration Rules, Appendix ATAS, paragraph ATAS 3.1.

Future official financial sponsor 

You will be asked about money you got or will get from an official financial sponsor. Examples of official financial sponsors include governments, universities and international companies or organisations. Examples of financial support may include a scholarship, internship, fellowship or training programme.

Select "Yes" if you will be receiving money from an official financial sponsor. Select "No" if otherwise.

After you select "Yes" you will have to show how you will prove this. You will have three options:

  • My Student sponsor has confirmed this information on my CAS
  • Letter of official financial sponsorship
  • I am not being wholly sponsored

Select the option as appropriate to your situation.

Course information

Check your CAS for this information. Enter the information as it is shown on your CAS.

Name of sponsor institution (school/college): University of Strathclyde

Course name: In your email CAS, see 'Course Title'.

Qualification you will get: In your email CAS, see 'Academic Level'

You will then be asked 'Are you going to be a student union sabbatical officer?' 

If you will be a new student starting a brand new course or you are a continuing student looking to come to the UK to resume your studies, then select "No".

Course dates 

Enter information as it appears under the 'COURSE DETAILS' section of your CAS.

Course start date: enter the 'Course Start Date'

Course end date: enter the 'Expected Course End Date'

Accommodation payments 

This question is about money paid to the University of Strathclyde for accommodation. If you have paid any, select "Yes" and answer the additional questions.

If you've not made any payments or you are not living in University of Strathclyde accommodation, select "No".

Course fees 

What are your course fees for your first year? (Enter course fees as they appear in the 'Accommodation and fees' part of your CAS.)

Have you or your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) already paid any of your course fees? (Select 'No' if they have not paid any your course fees or 'Yes' if they have paid some or all of your course fees. You'll see additional questions.)

How much has been paid? (Check your CAS carefully. Enter the amount you've paid. Select the option relevant to you to show the amount has been paid.)

Maintenance funds 

Are all of the maintenance funds required for this application in a bank account with your name on it? (If held in your personal bank account, select 'Yes'. If you are financially sponsored or you are relying on your parents' or legal guardians' bank statement, select 'No'.)

Immigration Health Surcharge 

You will now be asked to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). There will be some details you have to provide.

Enter the dates as from your CAS.
Continuing course If you are applying for a Student visa to start a completely new and different course, select "No".
Location of course Select "University of Strathclyde".
Is your course at NQF7?

Check your CAS.

If your course is level NQF7/SCQF 11, select "Yes". All other course levels, select "No".

Is your course for 13 months or less? This question is asking about the overall length of your course.

It is important to check the information you entered before submitting your Student visa application.

Once you proceed beyond the Immigration Health Surcharge section, you will no longer be able to edit your responses. Ensure all details are correct before continuing.

 

After you pay

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) and Student visa application fee

After you pay for the IHS, you will then have to pay for your Student visa application.

Booking a biometrics appointment

As part of your visa application, if you were not able to apply with the app, you'll have to book an appointment to submit your biometric information.

Each country's visa application centre will have its own instructions and process for you to follow.

Wait for decision

You will need to wait for the outcome of your Student visa application. 

If more information is required, check your email or communications from the Home Office through the contact details you provided in your application. If you are contacted, read through the instructions carefully and be aware of any deadlines.

When you receive a decision on your application, you will be informed whether you collect your documents from the visa application centre or returned to you by post.
