International studentsCheck your BRP

The Home Office are no longer producing Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) as of 31 October 2024. However, if your BRP is lost or stolen, you must still report this

You have been directed to this page as you have been issued a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

Your biometric residence permit (BRP) is an ID card issued by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).  Your BRP is your UK visa.  It contains your biographic details (name, date and place of birth) and biometric information (facial image and fingerprints).  Your BRP will also show your immigration category and confirms the conditions of your visa, for example, your working conditions.

You must carry your BRP when you travel outside of the UK.  If you travel without your BRP, you will not be permitted to re-enter the UK and will have to apply for a BRP replacement visa from your home country to return to the UK.

Checking your BRP

While uncommon, there can be errors made by UKVI when issuing your visa. This guide is intended to inform and guide you through the process of getting the error corrected as soon as possible to prevent future issues.  You should check the details of your BRP thoroughly and report any errors as soon as you notice them.

One of the most common errors on BRPs is the length of leave you have been granted to undertake your studies in the UK.  You should carefully read your visa decision email as soon as you receive it.  You must check that you have been given the correct amount of leave for your studies and for the wrap-up period noted in the table below:

Type of Course

Period granted before course start date

Period granted after course end date

A course of 12 months or longer

1 Month

4 Months

A course of 6 months or longer but shorter than 12 months for example, PGDE, PG Diploma courses

2 Months

A pre-sessional course of less than 6 months

1 Month

A course of less than 6 months in length which is not a pre-sessional course

When you receive your passport containing your single-entry Entry Clearance vignette (sticker) you should also check the following information:

Valid from date

Do not attempt to travel to the UK before this date; you will not be permitted to enter

Name

This must match your passport exactly

Date of birth

This must match your passport exactly

University of Strathclyde Sponsor Licence Number must be noted on the vignette

Working conditions

Work limit 20hrs p/w term time (unless pre-sessional where it will be 10hr p/w term time

If you find any of the errors noted above, it is vital that you have them corrected before you travel to the UK.

Have you noticed an error in your visa decision email/letter or vignette?  Contact your Visa Application Centre immediately and tell them exactly what you believe the error is.

You must do this before you travel to the UK.

If you discover an error on your BRP after collection, please report it immediately.  You have 10 days to notify UKVI of any errors.

To report an error, use the "Report a Problem" button available on the UK Government website.

If you fail to report any errors within 10 days, you may have to apply and pay for a replacement BRP.

If you applied for your visa from inside of the UK and find an error in the length or conditions of you visa, you must ask for an administrative review.  You must apply within 14 days of receiving your BRP.

Visit our eVisa webpage for guidance on how to report an error.

We've identified a recent rise in errors on dependant visas.  To ensure a smooth correction process, please take note:

  • Individual error reporting:  Even if you applied for your visas as a family unit, each dependant must report their own visa error following the instructions above.
  • Reporting instructions:  Refer to the previous sections for reporting procedures.  These will differ depending on whether you're currently inside or outside the UK.

If your BRP expires on 31 December 2024, but your total visa permission is longer than this date, this is not an error. The Home Office is changing the way in which visa holders prove their immigration status in the UK. BRP cards are being replaced with an online record of your immigration status known as an 'eVisa'.

You will be able to prove your immigration status online from 1 January 2025, without a BRP. Further information can be found on the GOV.UK webpage.

You MUST create a UKVI account and get access to your eVisa before the expiry of your BRP. If you have a BRP, you should continue to carry your BRP with you when you travel outside the UK until it expires.

Take a copy of your BRP and keep it safe at all times
