The University of Strathclyde is thrilled to announce a transformative, long-term partnership with Uddingston Hockey Club that will revolutionise the University’s Hockey Scholarship Programme. This collaboration introduces sector-leading Gold Plus and Platinum Hockey Scholarships, covering up to 40% of tuition fees for ambitious and talented hockey players.
In addition to covering a portion of tuition costs, Hockey scholars will have access to individualised year-round Strength & Conditioning, Physiotherapy, Performance Lifestyle and Sport Psychology support through the University Performance Sport team. Hockey scholarships are available across all undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at the University of Strathclyde.
The primary aim of this partnership is to draw ambitious hockey talent to the University of Strathclyde, where they can pursue academic excellence while competing in BUCS hockey for the University whilst also playing premier level hockey with Uddingston Hockey Club.
Uddingston Hockey Club is a premier performance hockey club in Scotland, known for its elite coaching, competitive league play, and state-of-the-art facilities, including a high-quality water-based pitch. The club competes at the top level in Scotland, regularly producing national quality players and attracting talent globally.
By bringing together academic and athletic aspirations, the partnership seeks to elevate both the University’s BUCS standing and Uddingston Hockey Club's league performance over the coming years.
Furthermore, the partnership leverages extensive business networks to broaden career and development pathways for student-athletes. Scholars will have direct access to work experience, internships, placements, and degree apprenticeships, connecting them to prestigious sectors such as Engineering, Architecture, Sciences, and Business. This initiative opens doors to career-defining roles and potential full-time graduate employment opportunities.
As a guide, scholarship applicants should have at least Junior (U18) International experience, but with consideration also given to, for example: players competing for Clubs in the Euro Hockey League, or Euro Cup Trophy.
Quotes: Allan McGill, President of Uddingston Hockey Club, said:
For many years, we have seen talented players leave Scotland for academic and career opportunities elsewhere, which has impacted the quality of hockey in the region. This partnership is our answer to reversing that trend, offering unrivalled academic and athletic benefits to attract and retain top players here in Scotland. The added benefit of international talent coming to our country will only serve to further elevate the game. We are excited to see the Club enter this long-term partnership with the University of Strathclyde. This is a significant step forward in our shared vision for hockey and higher education in Scotland.
Dave Sykes, Head of Sports Development at the University of Strathclyde, added:
Our partnership with Uddingston Hockey Club marks an exciting evolution in our hockey scholarship programme. Uddingston Hockey Club are a forward-thinking and ambitious Club, and this innovative collaboration enables us to provide unmatched academic and sporting opportunities to our student-athletes. With access to top-tier coaching, high-level competition, and tailored Sports Science and Medical support services, we are committed to creating an outstanding education and student experience that prepares our scholars for success both on and off the field.
