Research Interests
My research interests are focussed on the optical spectroscopy and electron microscopy of semiconductors, especially the III-nitride material system. This quaternary system consists of GaN, InN and GaN and its various alloys.
This material system has a wide range of applications, such as solid-state lighting, optoelectronic devices (light-emitting diodes and laser diodes), high-power and high-frequency electronics, water purification, solar cells or communication.
My main research focus lies on the investigation of nanostructures, such as nanorods, of these materials using high resolution cathodoluminescence (CL) hyperspectral imaging. I am also interested in combining the CL imaging technique with electron channelling contrast imaging, an electron diffraction method in the scanning electron microscope, to correlate the structural properties of dislocations with their optical properties. Furthermore, I am collaborating with colleagues from the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry to develop a novel organic colour converter for a hybrid organic/inorganic white LED using GaN-based nanostructures.
Characterisation techniques include CL hyperspectral imaging, photoluminescence, electroluminescence, X-ray microanalysis and electron bean-induced current.
