The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry welcomes visits from school groups, and is happy to visit schools too!
If you would like to be involved in one of the activities listed below, please contact Alan Kennedy.
Fun lab sessions.
Aimed mostly at senior school groups, these are hands-on morning lab sessions for aspiring scientists. The students perform a series of experiments all with an obvious and “fun” outcome, if they do them properly. They make stalagmites, giant bubbling messes, slime, and perform colour changing experiments. There are scientific learning outcomes – but the main goal is to let young people see themselves working in a University science lab, and encourage the idea that this may be a good choice for later study. Fun labs usually run in June and December of each year. Please note that the laboratory sessions have age and number restrictions.
Department Visits/tours.
The Department is happy to organise tours of the Department and labs, during working hours, for anyone considering applying for one of our courses. We can also do this for larger school groups.
Visits to your school.
If you wish Chemistry Department staff or students to attend a STEM day, careers day, or other event that your school is organising then please contact Alan. Please note that we try and help with as many of these events as we can, but that constraints on staff/student time means that not all can be accommodated.
On our OutReach pages we also offer help with AH chemistry projects, the Chemistry Accelerate program, widening access events, the West of Scotland Teachers Meeting, and specialist help for schools from activities such as ChemSTEP and the solar suitcase.
Alan is also happy to talk through other requests that you have that don’t fit in with the above and to chat about the range of possibilities available.
