Current projects & case studies

Wind
Onshore and offshore wind energy play a critical role in the transition to a low-carbon future, driving innovation in turbine technology, deployment strategies, and grid integration. Previous LCPE projects have developed optimal cabling routing tools using hybrid linear programming, highlighted poor turbine performance through data-driven approaches and reviewed structural fuse technologies for turbine foundations.

Asset Management
Effective asset management is essential for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of energy infrastructure, supporting the transition to low-carbon technologies. One LCPE project developed assessment methods to evaluate the structural condition of wooden poles using a “Smart Hammer.” Another project modelled high-voltage (HV) insulators to identify common causes of audible resonance in HV overhead conductors.

Networks
Power networks are the backbone of a sustainable energy system, requiring innovative solutions to support the growth of renewable energy and electrification. Completed LCPE projects include evaluating low-carbon cable backfill materials under various ground conditions and exploring ancillary service opportunities for renewable generation and storage assets.

Policy
Energy policies shape the trajectory of decarbonisation efforts, providing a framework for innovation and investment in low-carbon systems. Previous work has investigated how ‘Just Transition’ policies can be implemented in practice across networks, transport, and generation. Additionally, the impact of locational marginal pricing and the challenges of applying these costing frameworks within the context of GB power grids have been explored.
