Launched in 2007, this Centre is a strategic alliance between EDF Energy (formerly British Energy), the Institute for Energy and Environment and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  It delivers industrially focused research for the nuclear power industry.

The GSE Systems Power Station Simulator Suite is a £2M facility which provides a high-fidelity simulation of the control room within a range of generating stations. Configurable to cover a wide range of generation technologies, including combined cycle gas turbine and nuclear generation, it provides users with an immersive experience of operating a power station.

Established in 1997, The Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Electrical Power Systems is responsible for the research and development of effective electrical power system solutions. It also aims to provide Rolls-Royce with strategic and applied research to support aero, marine energy, and applied research to support key technologies and systems in aerospace, land and sea applications.

The need to control and prevent infection is of increasing significance. ROLEST was established to investigate and develop electro-technologies to combat public health problems. Also to provide novel solutions to difficult, and emerging, clinical challenges, as well as supporting the development of new medical technologies and procedures.

This partnership builds on the established relationship between the Institute and SSE and expands research activities into the thermal and renewable energy businesses, energy services and networks.

Established in 2007, the Scottish Power Advanced Research Centre (SPARC) built upon the long standing relationship between the company and the Institute.  It represents a long-term commitment to the Institute that provides access to proven research capability in Scottish Power Energy Network’s (SPEN) core business areas.

Delivering the future low carbon electricity network is emerging as a key strategic challenge for the energy sector. With global populations increasing, the growing demand for power relative to the supply available has become a serious problem in achieving a national and international vision of low carbon energy.
