Leif Azzopardi, Reader
Leif specializes in developing, evaluating and modelling information-rich and information-intensive applications and agents - and thus developing novel Recommender Systems and Information Retrieval Systems underpinned by Natural Language Processing, Language Modelling, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. His group focuses on understanding and modelling how information systems shape and influence people and society. Thus, at the heart of our research is the focus on modelling and predicting the interaction between people and systems.
Professor Gobinda Chowdhury
Gobinda is a Professor of Information Science, focusing on digital libraries and information services, trying to understand how people access and use information and data in different contexts. Recent research includes information systems and services for addressing global challenges and sustainable development.
Mark Dunlop, Senior Lecturer In Computer and Information Sciences
Mark’s research focuses on the usability of mobile systems, including mobile text entry, visualisation, sensor-driven interaction and evaluation of mobiles. He's increasingly interested in the use of mobiles to support wellbeing and health.
Martin Halvey, Reader
My research interests are in interactive information retrieval, collaborative information retrieval, multimodal interaction and human-computer interaction.
Perla Innocenti, Senior Lecturer
Perla’s research focus is on human information practices, particularly on how people create, search, and share information in naturalistic settings. Her empirical investigations traverse disciplinary boundaries, drawing on Cultural Heritage, Library and Information Science, Sociology, Informatics, Human Computer Interaction, Health. She is increasingly interested in the use of mobile technologies to support health and safety in hiking and pilgrimage routes.
Catherine Chavula, Lecturer
Catherine's research is in Information Retrieval (IR), focusing on complex search contexts such as learning and creativity, as well as all aspects of IR for low-resource languages. Her research integrates both human and computational perspectives to investigate search systems, including the understanding of user interaction behaviour in specific contexts, and the development of datasets and computational techniques to enhance the search experience for users within those contexts.
Dr Cassandra Kist
Cassandra Kist undertakes research at the intersection between cultural heritage/memory practices and digital platforms to unpick how their entanglement has implications for processes of social inclusion and exclusion. This involves understanding the experiences of professionals and communities accessing and engaging with digital cultural heritage, drawing on techniques such as ethnography, user research, and co-creation.
Professor Wendy Moncur, Professor of Cybersecurity & Co-director of the Strath
Wendy carries out research into lived experiences in the Digital Age. Her research focuses on online identity, reputation, trust and cybersecurity. It traverses disciplinary boundaries, drawing on human-computer interaction, psychology, sociology, digital anthropology, and design.
Yashar Moshfeghi, Senior Lecturer in Computer & Information Sciences
Yashar works in using Data Science and in particular Information Retrieval, Big Data and Applied Machine Learning, his research is directed at addressing a critical and challenging data science task: to processing, analysing, and learning from the abundant streams of heterogeneous data about individuals and their environment gathered from recent technological advances such as MRI, EEG, Internet-enabled wearable devices, smartphones, social media and smart cities.
Emma Nicol, Lecturer in Information Behaviour
Emma’s main research interests are Information Behaviour and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Her experience of empirical investigations of information seeking and user interactions with technology encompasses studies in many human contexts and occupational domains including Education, Healthcare, Law, FinTech and Cultural Heritage.
Dmitri Roussinov, Senior Lecturer
Dmitri has contributed to the fields of information systems, information retrieval, natural language processing, search engines, security informatics, medical informatics, human-computer interaction, databases and others.
Ian Ruthven, Head of the Strathclyde iSchool Research Group
Ian’s focus is on the human experience of interacting with information, particularly on how people find information. This involves understanding how people seek information, designing appropriate interactive search systems, and developing human-focused approaches for evaluating information systems.
