Use of Gen-AI in learning & assessment What to do when using Gen-AI tools

When using Gen-AI tools, you should...

  • Remember that your University education is about developing essential knowledge, skills, and competencies. Don’t allow the misuse of Gen-AI (or any other tool or service) to undermine this process
  • Pay attention to the learning outcomes that are set for you and the marking criteria applied to your assessments and ensure you demonstrate that you are meeting these through your own efforts
  • Always ensure that the work you submit is your own, that it results from your own thinking and effort, regardless of whether or not any Gen-AI tool has been used
  • Remain critical and questioning of content created using Gen-AI tools, actively questioning and fact-checking the accuracy and appropriateness of any outputs
  • Be transparent about when, where, and how Gen-AI has been used in the development and creation of work that is submitted for assessment and formally acknowledge this use where this is required
  • Keep up to date with programme and University policy and guidance in this area and follow any specific instructions you are given by your Department. This is not only important for your academic integrity while completing your programme of study, but for your longer-term ability to work with integrity and competence in your post-university life

When using Gen-AI tools, you should not...

  • Forget the environmental costs of running prompts through Gen-AI tools
  • Use Gen-AI as a substitute or proxy for your own thinking or work
  • Depend on Gen-AI to produce reliable references or materials. Gen-AI tools are prone to ‘hallucinations' which can involve entirely invented and misleading information
  • Forget that Gen-AI tools can be inaccurate, misleading, biased (and potentially harmful) in their outputs
  • Run code generated using Gen-AI without fully understanding how the code works and the implications of running it
  • Submit work which has been produced by Gen-AI as though it was your own
  • Upload complete copies of your work to any Gen-AI tool without understanding what could happen to this information thereafter
  • Enter personal information or data, research information or data, copyright protected information or materials, or anything belonging to the University (such as lecture slides) into a Gen-AI tool
  • Use AI bots to attend classes or meetings online, or to take recordings or notes in on-campus classes or meetings without the explicit permission of the other parties in the class or meeting
