Making the most of your assessment & feedback at StrathclydeFrequently asked questions

Any questions?

Below you'll find answers to some commonly asked questions about making the most of your assessment and feedback.

Approach your feedback with an open mind and positive attitude – see it as an opportunity to develop and grow. Make sure that you carefully read through all your feedback. Take notes as you read with the aim of identifying your areas of strength and weakness. You could look again at the assessment instructions and marking criteria to see how your feedback relates to these. Another step would be to compare with previous feedback if you can so you can see if there are any areas where you have improved or if there are consistent issues. It is important that you use your feedback to create a plan for how to improve future submissions.

First, you should read over your feedback. Next, consider your feedback in relation to the assessment criteria to see the extent to which you have fulfilled the requirements for the assessment. If you are still unclear why you have received your mark, approach the relevant member of staff for clarification.

There are various ways to contact a member of staff. You could:

  • speak to a staff member face-to-face, at the beginning/end of a lecture or tutorial to either make an appointment or to answer a quick query;
  • email the staff member to either receive a reply to your query or to set up a meeting; or,
  • check to see if the staff member has office hours, that is dedicated time slots for meeting students

It is important for you to know that staff value students being proactive in their learning and would be happy to clarify any assessment criteria or feedback. Your Programme Student Representative may also be able to give some tips on how to ask for clarification.

It is important that you understand your feedback and know how to apply it to your future assessments. If you are uncertain how to progress your work, it is a good idea to approach a member of staff to discuss your feedback.
