Education InsightNational Student Survey (NSS)

Make your voice heard!

The National Student Survey (NSS) provides a unique opportunity for final-year undergraduate students to share their views on their learning experience at Strathclyde.

What is it?

The NSS is a survey aimed at final year undergraduates across the UK with the aim of gathering student opinions about their experiences on their course. It asks questions on a range of areas including teaching, academic support, organisation and management and learning resources, as well as giving you the opportunity to provide free text feedback about your course!

The survey is an independent UK-wide initiative, carried out by market research firm Ipsos MORI (on behalf of the UK funding councils) and runs from January to April each year.

Join the 5.3 million students who have shared their views and helped to inspire change in universities and colleges since the survey was launched in 2005

Why should I complete it?

  • The NSS provides a powerful resource for informing providers on how to enhance the student learning experience. Your views do matter and can lead to real change, here at Strathclyde! See some of the things that have changed as a result of student feedback at Strathclyde.
  • You will be helping prospective students choose their course. NSS data is included in the government's Discover Uni website (as well as others).
  • You could win in our prize draw!

How do I complete it?

If you're eligible to complete the NSS, then, once the survey opens, Ipsos MORI will contact you, using your University email, providing a unique link to the survey. As the survey progresses, Ipsos MORI will try and contact you by phone and by SMS, asking you to complete the survey. You can complete the NSS online and you should also see a link to the survey on Myplace.

If you haven't heard from Ipsos MORI while the survey is running, and think you should be included in the NSS, please contact us! Students only get one chance to complete the NSS during the course of their undergraduate studies - don't miss out!

NSS results from previous years are available online from the Office for Students.

Are my responses anonymous?

The University doesn't see your individual response, so please feel free to give your honest opinions!

The University receives aggregate reports where at least 10 respondents have completed the survey in any given breakdown (e.g. by course, department etc.). All free text comments are redacted by Ipsos MORI and names of people are deleted so individuals cannot be identified.

Ipsos MORI run the prize draw and notify the University of the winner at the end of the survey. We will then get in touch with the lucky winner to send them their prize!
