The University of Strathclyde Law School has launched a new Masters programme which aims to produce graduates who will go on to become maritime law professionals in a global world.
The new Master’s programme in international Maritime Law is the first in Scotland, and one of few in the UK and Europe specifically focusing on maritime law to be open to graduates from various disciplines. Law graduates who complete the programme will be awarded an LLM, with those from other disciplines obtaining an MSc degree.
Strathclyde’s new programme builds on the legacy of the groundbreaking One Ocean Hub and Strathclyde Law School’s environmentally conscious ethos, and offers a unique opportunity to bring together Scottish and international experts to deliver core modules in “Admiralty Law: Courts and Jurisdictions”; “Admiralty Law: Contracts and Transactions”; and “Oceans Governance and International Law”. Students can choose to focus in on specific learning interest, with a wide range of elective modules ensuring the programme caters to an individual’s needs and career pathways.
Future thinking
In line with Strathclyde’s ethos of being ‘a place for useful learning’ the programme includes a sharing of expertise by maritime law experts complemented by a wide range of elective modules providing an opportunity to develop particular skills in international arbitration, oceans governance, blue growth and dispute resolution.
The wider list of optional classes offers greater flexibility and students will be able to build their skillset for the world of work while at Strathclyde, learning how these relate to the work of law firms and multinationals in the fields of admiralty law, environmental law, commercial law, shipping law and insurance law.
There is the opportunity to undertake industrial internship, a professional consultancy project, an enhanced research proposal or dissertation research project, while combining modules from other disciplines including business, engineering and science.
Dr. Mirosław M. Sadowski, coordinator of the LLM/MSc course, said,
“I am extremely excited about bringing this programme to a city with such a rich maritime history. Studying within the environment populated with the legacies of the – oftentimes difficult – past will bring a unique dimension to the programme, leaving students with deep insights into the myriad of various legal aspects of the relationship between the land and the sea.
“The programme opens the door to ample career choices for graduates, including, but not limited to, working in the shipping, freight and shipbuilding industries, Protection & Indemnity (P&I) clubs, the civil service, the diplomatic corps, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), specialised law firms, and different national and international maritime organisations."
