Danielle is currently studying BSc Education & Curricular Studies with Teaching Qualification at the University of Strathclyde
Tell us a little bit about your background..
I have an undergraduate degree in Fashion Branding and worked within the retail space for around 10 years. I worked as a Visual Merchandiser for two well-known clothing brands.
What drew you towards this course? Had you always had an interest in this area of study?
There isn't a course like it anywhere else in Scotland! I knew this is what I wanted to do and this course gave me the best opportunity to achieve that.
Tell us about the format of the programme. What is a typical working week like?
It differs week to week, you have your set classes (lecturers and seminars) but depending on the time of year you could be on placement in a school. Working with your peers on a group project, working through an assessment. My highlights have to be teaching my first solo lesson on placement, it is an experience I will never forget.
Tell us about your experience on placement..
During this course you go on two placements. One before Christmas and one after christmas (which is split into two sections). I absolutely loved both of my placement schools. The staff were so welcoming and supportive. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication but it all definitely pays off in the long run when you see yourself growing as a student teacher, you become more confident within yourself.
What is the teaching on your course like? How has it been working with other students?
All of the lectures are very supportive and so passionate about education. They do the most to prepare you for the world of teaching. The BSc course is great because you are with your classmate for two years, so you really build up strong bonds which are really important. We all actively share resources, support and guide each other.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My main ambition for the future is to become a Home Economics teacher in Scotland. This degree has 100% set me up. It has given me the degree to move forward, a better understand of the Scottish education landscape, pedagogy and a deeper understanding of my subject.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this course?
Go for it! This course will set you up for success.
