Eight Chinese exchange students from the School of Education at the University of Strathclyde recently visited a school in East Dunbartonshire to share some Chinese culture with P4-7 pupils.

P4-7 pupils at Lairdsland Primary School had the opportunity to participate in a three-week block of Chinese Language and Culture classes as part of their ‘Friday Fun’ programme.

The ‘Friday Fun’ programme offers pupils the chance to learn more about something that interests them. Children have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses on a variety of topics such as arts and crafts, computing and technology, and sports. This term the children in P4-7 had the opportunity to participate in a Chinese Language and Culture taster class. The children learned some basic greetings, introductions and how to count to 100 in Mandarin.  They also had the opportunity to participate in other activities including calligraphy, Chinese cooking, traditional Chinese dancing and paper cutting.

During the second week of the block, eight visiting Chinese exchange students provided an authentic Chinese cooking experience and traditional Chinese dancing masterclass. The pupils made traditional dumplings and rice dumplings. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and described the class as “really fun, interesting and tasty!”

Hu Suyan, Qin Ling, Ge Zhouqing, Sun Ya, Jian Yuting, Yu Xiaoyue, Xu Ting and Guan Yunan are currently on exchange at Strathclyde from China and have been visiting several schools across Glasgow as part of their studies. Lairdsland Primary School hopes to welcome the students back to assist with the current P3 interdisciplinary topic - ‘World Kitchen’!
