Communities, Societies and States

The Strathclyde Communities, Societies, and States Research Group brings together an international, interdisciplinary, and collaborative team of scholars who work on questions of identity, belonging, conflict, nationhood, temporality, and memory. Using a diverse range of methods from across the humanities and social sciences, we engage with historical and cultural problems from across the globe.

Our key focuses include the history of contemporary Ireland, north and south; histories of the Atlantic world and of radical politics; histories of enslaved people and of abolition; Scottish history and culture in the past and present; migration and transnationalism; and oral history and its connections with collective memories of the past.

Our research group co-organises a regular seminar series and brings together colleagues who teach on these topics to share ideas and pedagogies across disciplines.

Our approach is informed by Strathclyde’s location in the centre of Glasgow, at the heart of the medieval city, alongside the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development, social progressiveness, and technological advancement. Drawing on this institutional legacy, we aim to foster an inclusive, critical, and collaborative research culture that looks to the past, present and future in examining and imaging communities, societies, and states across the world.
