Project ProGrESS first face-to-face meeting kicks off at ACG
Project ProGrESS met for two days at the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Composites Group (ACG) facilities and at the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre (LMC) as work starts on the three-year project in composites recycling and sustainability.

ACG members present at virtual Risø Materials Symposium
Four members of the ACG virtually attended and presented research at the 41st Risø International Symposium on Materials Science. The event was organised and hosted by the Technical University of Denmark.
New PhD opportunity with ACG
We are currently seeking an outstanding and committed graduate to undertake research in the area of Polymer Composite Structures for Processing Corrosive Fluids. This fully funded PhD position is open to candidates from the UK and EU.
Dr Liu Yang wins prestigious fellowship
ACG lead, Dr Liu Yang, has been awarded a four year industrial fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering. This fellowship is sponsored by the Weir Group and Weir Advanced Research Centre. He received the award at a ceremony in London in September 2019.
ACG awarded Supergen funding for composite recycling research
A proposal to develop a cost effective, commercially viable recycling process for wind turbine blades has been awarded funding from the Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub.
ACG at the 1st Conference on Aerogel Inspired Materials
Senior lecturer Dr Liu Yang and PhD students Kaibao Wang and Shima Dayarian attended the 1st Conference on Aerogels Inspired Materials, held at Newcastle University in September 2019.
ACG at the International Rubber Conference 2019
Dr Liu Yang and PhD student Wichain Chailad attended the 2019 International Rubber Conference conference held at the Kia Oval, London at which Wichain gave an oral presentation on his first year PhD studies in the session on friction and erosion of rubber.
ACG at summer 2019 conferences in Portugal
Five members of the Advanced Composites Group attended two different conferences held in Portugal. Prof Jim Thomason spoke at the International Conference on Natural Fibres, while a group of post-docs and PhD students presented at the International Conference on Mechanics of Composites.

ACG visit British Airways Maintenance Glasgow
In February 2019 the ACG were kindly given a tour of the facilities at BAMG where routine maintenance of British Airways fleet aircraft is carried out
ACG presentation at the Şişecam Glass Symposium
Prof Thomason reviewed the latest ACG research on the Fibre-Matrix Interfaces in Glass Fibre Composites in an invited paper at the 33rd Şişecam Glass Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey, 2nd November 2018.
Undergraduate wins RAeS award for research project
Undergraduate student Muzamil Irfan has won a second award for his 4th year research project “Regenerating the strength of thermally recycled fibre reinforcement for reuse in composite applications”. Following an award from IMechE, his work was recognised by the Royal Aeronautical Society as the Best Aeronautical Engineering Project at University of Strathclyde for the 2017-18 academic year.

ACG at ECCM18 in Athens
Half a dozen members of the ACG attended and presented their research at the biennial European Conference on Composite Materials. This year’s edition ECCM18 was held in Athens, Greece.

DACOMAT project to develop new composite materials for wind turbines and large structures
The objective of DACOMAT is to develop more damage tolerant and damage predictable low cost composite materials, for use in large load carrying structures such as wind turbine blades, bridges and buildings.

ACG secures major new research funding
The ACG will begin work in 2018 as part of the Horizon 2020 DaCoMat project. This exciting project represents 5 EU countries, including 1 Independent Research Organisation, 3 Universities and 8 Companies and will cover the full industrial value chain.

ACG member recognised as “Research leader of the future”
As a recipient of a Scottish Crucible 2017 award, Dr Yang attended the Research Awards Reception hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The evening celebrated a group of leading researchers from across Scotland, who has collectively been granted over £2M in support by RSE.

Glass fibre manufacturing group Chongqing Polycomp International Corporation visited our group to learn more about our facilities and our leading composites research capabilities, with a view to possible future collaboration.
Travel awards for postgraduate student
Second year postgraduate student Sairah Bashir has recently been awarded two bursaries to help fund her travel to a conference to present work on strength regeneration of thermally damaged glass fibres
Subsea Expo 2017
Dr Liu Yang attended the annual UK Subsea Expo in Aberdeen to showcase his team's work on polymer aerogel insulation blankets. This project is a collaboration between our group, Blueshift International Materials Inc and the Oil & Gas Innovation Center.
