DMEM partners on EPSRC funded Made Smarter Innovation Research Centre for Smart, Collaborative Industrial Robotics.
The Smart Cobotics Centre combines six leading UK universities: Loughborough University (lead), University of Bristol, Cranfield University, University of Dundee, University of Strathclyde and University of Warwick and multiple industry partners, all in all bringing together research and practice in manufacturing, engineering, digital technology, robotics, human-factors, verification and safety, law, psychology, systems engineering, metrology and ICT. DMEM’s contribution focuses on designing human-robot collaborations.

MarRI-UK - UK centre for maritime innovation and technology established
A consortium of British companies, academia and government, have formally established a new national centre for maritime innovation and technology (“MarRI-UK”). The centre, offering exciting development opportunities for the UK’s £40bn maritime sector, is based at the University of Strathclyde, with hubs to be announced across the UK.
The David Cunningham Quality of Life Award
The David Cunningham Quality of Life Award is an award honouring David Cunningham, our department's highly respected Director of Operations. David sadly died on Saturday 8 October 2016, at the age of 47, following a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
Defining the future in smart product development
In collaboration with 12 other institutions, the Smart Products Through-Life Research Roadmap report was published by the University of Strathclyde exploring the research challenges and opportunities for smart product development. It illustrates the requirements, challenges, and resources required to meet them in the short, medium and long term. It also explores value creation through life and opportunities for better integration between life phases.
DMEM announced new partnership with High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI)
The Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM), University of Strathclyde is delighted to announce a new partnership with the High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI), following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in early September 2016. The partnership between DMEM and HSSMI will enable the organisations to address some of the key challenges facing Scottish manufacturing, through manufacturing-based collaborative research, engineering service projects and events.
Professor Xichun Luo wins prestigious Ludwig Mond Prize
Professor Xichun Luo has been awarded the prestigious 2015 Ludwig Mond Prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for his paper, "A haptic digital tool to assist the design, planning and manufacture of micro and nanostructures."
Our graduates win at the IED Annual Awards
Once again DMEM has been successful at this year’s Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) Annual Awards. The IED annual awards are given to IED student members who produce exceptional final year projects and the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management has a strong record of success in its submissions. Congratulations to Joey Ho, who has recently graduated in Product Design Engineering, who won the Individual Prize for her project, “Improving Spinal Health through better sitting habits”.
