BSc Biomedical ScienceMyra Azrin
Myra is a student from Malaysia who came to Scotland with a dream (and two suitcases!) to pursue a career in biomedical research.
She has a strong interest in laboratory-based research, science communication, and public healthcare. Myra is particularly drawn to rare disease research and the role of science in addressing medical challenges to promote equitable healthcare outcomes. She is also passionate about understanding how scientific discoveries can translate into real-world impact.
Why I Chose Strathclyde
When it was time to apply to university, Strathclyde stood out for its consistent rankings in biomedical science and its reputation for excellent teaching and research efforts. What impressed me most was how active the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) community is, regularly contributing to scientific discoveries and engaging with the wider public.
A key factor of my decision was the course’s accreditation by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal Society of Biology (RSB). While I wish I had the opportunity to visit in person before applying, I ultimately don’t regret choosing Strathclyde. What solidified my decision to accept my offer was the virtual offer holder events, where I gained perspective and insight into university life, course content, and the University’s strong academic legacy.
When I arrived at Strathclyde, the warmth and sense of community I was welcomed with made it easy to build a “home away from home”. The more time I spent here, the more obvious it was to me how passionate the lecturers are. Their passion shines through with their teaching, and in the time and support they offer to students. The laboratories are modern and well-equipped. In addition, the on-campus facilities such as the library, gym and union offer a little something for everyone.
Why I chose to study BSc Biomedical Science
I decided to pursue biomedical science after working alongside pre-meds and medical students during college. Although I was encouraged to pursue a medical degree (how stereotypical, right?), I realised I was more drawn to the detailed, behind-the-scenes work of a Biomedical Scientist, someone who makes meaningful contributions to healthcare through diagnostics and research.
I’ve always been fascinated by disease biology and infectious diseases. As a child, I loved watching shows like ‘Monsters Inside Me’, which explored rare infectious diseases and their global impact. That early exposure sparked my curiosity and affirmed my passion that has guided me for nearly a decade and ultimately led to my pursuit of this degree.
My experience so far
While I’ve yet to begin my degree-specific courses, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the programme so far. From the electives in the first year to the core biomedical science disciplines we explored in the second year, the learning process for me has been both deep and diverse. I truly feel that it will give me a strong foundation for the years ahead and for building a career in biomedical science.
The course also integrates a wide range of learning formats, from lab reports, group work, essays, case studies, presentations, and professional development tasks. I believe this will help me build valuable transferable skills that will benefit me no matter which path I undertake.
This summer, I’ll be returning to Malaysia to contribute to the research efforts at the Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY), where I’ll be working under the Translational Cancer Biology Research Unit. The project focuses on identifying immunomodulatory gene targets in oral cancer using CRISPR/Cas9 technology and 3D cell culture models. It’s a meaningful opportunity for me to gain hands-on research experience while contributing to cancer research efforts in my home country.
My Ambitions and goals
I aspire to pursue a PhD and eventually build a career in research and development, either in academia or industry, focused on understanding and addressing diseases that affect global populations. While I’m also open to working in the NHS as a biomedical scientist, I would like to explore all my options, including opportunities in biotechnology, public health, and interdisciplinary healthcare, before I fully commit.
My time at Strathclyde has helped me develop a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that will support me as I branch out into the world. It’s truly one of the most significant stepping stones in my life, one that I’m incredibly grateful for. To the advisors, lecturers, and senior students who’ve offered me support, advice, and encouragement, I will always be thankful for them as they’ve given me a broader perspective of what this field has to offer.
What would I say to anyone considering Strathclyde?
Take the opportunity with both hands. If you’re passionate about your interest, you’ll find a wealth of knowledge, support, and experience waiting for you here. Strathclyde has not only helped me grow academically, but it’s also given me the skills and confidence to pursue my goals with purpose.
