Maryam is a clinical pharmacist with a strong interest in biotechnology. She currently works as a Manufacturing Associate at Moderna.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

After completing my bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, I discovered my passion for biotechnology and envisioned a future career in this field. Given the highly competitive nature of the biotechnology industry, I knew pursuing a postgraduate degree would provide me with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to stand out and achieve my career goals.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde? 

The University of Strathclyde stood out to me as one of the top-ranked universities in the UK for biotechnology, with a mission rooted in being "the place of useful learning." The MSc Industrial Biotechnology programme is unique, being the only one in the UK that includes an industrial placement, a crucial factor for me as I sought to gain practical, hands-on experience to accelerate my career in this competitive industry.

What do you like about your course and Strathclyde?

I appreciated that the course was a collaboration among various universities across Scotland, which allowed me to learn from leading experts in the field from all over the country. The programme's strong focus on industry applications was particularly valuable, offering an eye-opening perspective on the biotechnology sector and equipping me with skills directly relevant to my future career.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?

During my industrial placement, I specialised as a fermentation scientist, gaining extensive hands-on experience in laboratory techniques and industrial processes. This experience was instrumental in kickstarting my career. Additionally, I developed strong networking skills through IBioIC’s emphasis on networking events, which enabled me to establish meaningful connections within the biotechnology industry.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

My ambition is to become a leading expert in the biotechnology field, contributing to innovative solutions that address global challenges in health and sustainability. Strathclyde has provided me with a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and valuable industry connections, all of which will be instrumental in helping me achieve my goals.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Living in Glasgow has been an incredible experience. The people are exceptionally kind and friendly, making it a welcoming place to live. The city itself is vibrant and beautiful, with a rich cultural heritage. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and will always cherish my memories of Glasgow.

Has anything surprised you about living/studying here?

The weather took some getting used to, it’s rainy throughout much of the year! However, the warmth of the people and the city’s charm more than make up for it.

What do you do to relax in your spare time? Are you part of any clubs with the Students' Association?

In my spare time, I enjoy cycling, running, going to the gym, and spending time with friends. I was also a part of Strathclyde University Muslim Students Association ISOC, where I made many great friends and enjoyed a sense of community.

Have you managed to explore anywhere outside of Glasgow?

Yes, I’ve had the chance to explore many beautiful places in Scotland. My placement was in Irvine, which boasts a stunning beach. I’ve also visited Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, and Stirling, among other places. Scotland’s breathtaking nature and scenic landscapes have left a lasting impression on me.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at Strathclyde?

Studying at Strathclyde has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The combination of high-quality education, industry opportunities, and the friendly atmosphere of Glasgow makes it an excellent choice. Just be sure to pack a raincoat!
