Noah Schafnitz, from California, decided to study for his postgraduate degree in Forensic Science at Strathclyde after graduating with a major in Forensic Biology from San Jose State University. Here, he tells us more about his experience.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?

The programme itself was recommended to me by former professors at my undergraduate university. I have always been fascinated by forensic science and I felt that pursuing higher education in a foreign country could provide me with a unique challenge and opportunity to diversify my understanding of the subject.

What did you like about your course and Strathclyde?

The course covers a wide variety of forensic topics and supplements lessons with ample experiential learning opportunities. This is great for any student who wants to widen their knowledge base. In addition, the teaching staff were always eager to help students navigate uncertainties with course material. During my time at Strathclyde, I felt that the staff were truly invested in my success. Lastly, I like how Strathclyde offers modern recreational facilities and numerous services aimed at optimizing the student experience.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?

During my time at Strathclyde, I developed technical confidence with equipment frequently used in forensic laboratories. As a forensic biologist, I developed a solid grasp of how DNA is handled from sample collection to profiling. In addition to biological analyses, I got the opportunity to practice chemical and physical techniques which contributed to a more well-rounded forensic skillset.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

I thoroughly believe my time at Strathclyde has equipped me with the tools I need to achieve my goal of becoming an excellent forensic scientist. I am confident that the skillset I have developed at Strathclyde will allow me to transition nicely into the professional space.
