Biomedical EngineeringAngeles Odalys Felix Castaneda
Angeles Odalys Felix Castaneda from Mexico joined the MSc in Biomedical Engineering, following being awarded a prestigious British Council Women in STEM Scholarship in 2024. Angeles shares why she chose Strathclyde for her studies, and what she is enjoying most about her time here.
How did you first hear about the University of Strathclyde?
I first heard about the University of Strathclyde through the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship. In my country, the scholarship programme was available for two universities, and Strathclyde was one of them.
This was the first time I had researched the University, and as I explored its courses, I became very interested in the MSc in Biomedical Engineering. I was particularly attracted by its interdisciplinary approach and strong research focus, so I decided to apply.
Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?
I chose to study at Strathclyde mainly because of the master’s course in Biomedical Engineering. I had never seen a course like this before, and I was really interested in it. Additionally, Strathclyde has a multicultural community that has allowed me to connect with people from different backgrounds, which has enriched both my professional and personal life. The large international student community not only makes it diverse but also creates an inclusive and welcoming environment.
How did you first hear about the British Council Women in STEM scholarship?
I heard about the Women in STEM scholarship during an online conference for International Women's Day. The event was organised by Becalos, a foundation that offers scholarships in my country. I was enrolled in one of their English programmes at the time, so they had my contact details and invited me to the conference. During the event, Monica Angulo gave a talk about the scholarship programme. After listening to her, I looked for more information and decided to apply right away.
How has the scholarship helped you with your studies?
Since I was 17 years old, I have dreamed of doing a postgraduate degree abroad because I wanted to expand my knowledge beyond what was available in my home country. This scholarship has helped me to achieve one of my biggest goals: a Masters degree in one of the world's top academic destinations. It has also broadened my perspective on what I can do as an engineer. I now understand that my field allows me to conduct research in different areas and I have learnt about new procedures and methodologies. This experience has made me feel more capable and confident in my field of study. This would never have been possible without this scholarship.
What do you like about your course?
I love my Biomedical Engineering course. First of all, the lecturers are specialists in their fields, and the Department has partnerships with other institutions, such as the University of Glasgow and the NHS. This means that some of my lectures are delivered by experts with real-world experience. I also appreciate the diversity of modules within the course. Biomedical engineering is a vast field, and this master’s degree allows students to explore different areas or specialise in a particular one. Lastly, the researchers and faculty members are incredibly supportive and always willing to help students. I have felt truly welcomed in the biomedical community, thanks to both my professors and my classmates.
What do you like about Glasgow and Scotland? Have you managed to do much travelling whilst here?
Glasgow is an absolutely stunning city! Every time I go out, I'm amazed all over again. There is always something to do: you can visit museums, go shopping, spend time with friends, play sports, or simply enjoy a nice dinner. Despite being a lively city, it has a calm atmosphere, and there isn't the same overwhelming rush you might feel in a large metropolis. The friendly people really add to the welcoming environment.
The public transport system is excellent too, making it easy to visit different places. I haven't travelled as much as I would like, but I have visited Edinburgh and Dundee, both of which are beautiful too. However, I highly recommend having a good jacket and an umbrella to fully enjoy the experience!
What has been the highlight of your time here so far?
Besides all the academic and professional knowledge I have gained, the most valuable part of my experience has been the people I’ve met. I have made friends from all over the world and learned about different cultures, languages, and even food. This has broadened my perspective on life. Even though I am far from home, I have found a sense of warmth and belonging among the people I’ve connected with here. Additionally, I have discovered new aspects of myself and gained confidence in ways I never expected.
What do you do in your spare time? Are you part of any groups or societies?
In my free time, I like to stay active, so I regularly attend yoga and Pilates classes at Strathclyde Sport. I also enjoy playing badminton with my friends.
Apart from sports, I love spending time with my friends and meeting people from other courses. The University offers many opportunities to socialise, whether through student societies, networking events, or casual meetups. I have found it very easy to make friends here because the community is welcoming and diverse.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
My main ambition is to make an impact on the healthcare system in my country, and if I can contribute on a global scale, that would be even better. At Strathclyde, I have learned more about the different ways I can achieve this goal and have gained new perspectives on how to approach it. I have also met many outstanding researchers who can help guide me on this path.
Would you recommend Strathclyde to other people and why?
Absolutely! Strathclyde is not only one of the best universities in Scotland and the UK, but it also provides an incredibly welcoming and supportive environment. It offers excellent mental health support, as well as services specially designed for international students.
The University has great facilities, including a well-equipped library, academic support programmes, and Strathclyde Sport for physical wellbeing.
Additionally, there are frequent social events at Strath Union and the Lord Todd, making it easy to balance studies, health, and social life. Strathclyde has given me an incredible academic and personal experience. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be here, and I highly encourage others to consider studying at this University!
