My name is Tabish Wajihuddin Taji, and I’m a pharmacist from India, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy. I recently graduated with an MSc in Advanced Pharmacology, earning Distinction, from the University of Strathclyde.
My passion for pharmacology truly developed during my third-year industrial training, where I developed a strong foundation in pharmaceutical research and development. Building on this experience, I undertook an independent apprenticeship as a trainee pharmacist during my final undergraduate year. This opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge of pharmacology, enhance my ability to manage medication therapies and gain practical experience in patient counselling and pharmaceutical care.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a trainee biochemist for 12 weeks, where I developed proficiency in performing diagnostic tests, analysing biochemical data, and interpreting clinical results. This experience not only deepened my understanding of biochemical processes but also reinforced my knowledge of disease mechanisms and their clinical applications, a key component of my field. These experiences, along with my academic background, have strengthened my analytical skills, attention to detail, teamwork and collaboration, and ability to work effectively in a laboratory setting, skills that are vital for success in pharmacological research and drug development.
How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?
I chose to study at the University of Strathclyde because of its outstanding reputation in pharmacology and biomedical sciences and its strong focus on research and practical learning. The Advanced Pharmacology programme offered the perfect platform for me to pursue my interests in drug discovery, molecular biology, and therapeutic advancements. What particularly attracted me to Strathclyde was the opportunity to work closely with experienced faculty members actively engaged in research. The University’s emphasis on practical education, alongside a rich learning environment, provided me with the ideal setting to develop my skills and gain in-depth knowledge in pharmacology and biomedical sciences.
What did you like about your course and Strathclyde?
One of the aspects I most appreciated about my course at Strathclyde was the opportunity to work as a research student as part of my Masters research project. This experience provided me with invaluable practical exposure to pharmacological research, including drug testing, experimental design, and organ bath experiments. It significantly deepened my understanding of the field and allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world lab settings.
I also greatly valued the strong support system at Strathclyde. The professors and lecturers were always accessible to clarify doubts, offer guidance, and provide relevant references. Their commitment to student success, combined with their active involvement in research, made the learning process both engaging and enjoyable. The University's collaborative environment, paired with state-of-the-art facilities, provided an ideal setting to refine my skills and further fuel my passion for pharmacology.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?
During my masters research project at Strathclyde, I developed professional skills in pharmacological testing, particularly through organ bath experiments, where I assessed the effects of active pharmacological compounds on vascular aortic tissues of rats, enhancing my understanding of drug-receptor interactions (for example, G protein-coupled receptors) and dose-response relationships.
I gained proficiency in experimental design, and molecular biology techniques such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Griess, MTT Assay, and gene expression analysis to explore drug mechanisms. Additionally, I refined my data and statistical analysis skills using software like LabChart and GraphPad Prism to interpret and present results. These experiences not only strengthened my technical competence but also improved my problem-solving, attention to detail, and independent working, and lab skills, all of which are essential for a career in pharmacology.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
My ambition is to become a clinical research scientist, with the goal of advancing my understanding of drug mechanisms and their therapeutic applications. I plan to further my education by pursuing a PhD, which will allow me to continue my expertise in clinical research and contribute to the development of new treatments. My time at Strathclyde has been instrumental in shaping these ambitions, as the hands-on research experience, exposure to advanced technologies, and collaboration with experienced faculty members have provided me with a solid foundation in both pharmacology and research methodology. The skills I developed, particularly in experimental design, data analysis, and critical thinking, have prepared me for the challenges of advanced research. Strathclyde’s emphasis on research-driven education and its supportive environment will continue to guide me as I will pursue my career goals and contribute to the scientific community.
