Expanding the student experience
In 2019, the University was honoured to receive a gift in the Will of a former faculty member, dedicated to supporting students in the Faculty of Engineering.
By channelling their generosity through the Alumni Fund, their gift has now supported over 20 student-led engineering projects, helping students to innovate and unlock their potential beyond the classroom.

Strathclyde Marine Robotic Society are one of the many student groups to benefit from this invaluable support.
Directly benefiting from this generous faculty member’s gift, the society purchased essential components and tools needed to build an autonomous surface vessel model – StrathVoyager - alongside equipping their workshop within the department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (NAOME). The gift also enabled the team to participate in their first international competition - the prestigious Njord Challenge.
The workshop space has provided students with hands on experience of marine robotics and autonomous systems, strengthening the opportunities for members to explore mechanical and electronic prototyping.
In the Njord Challenge, the team were awarded the Team Spirit award, fuelling their motivation to continue their development and progress in building the society and advancing autonomous maritime systems.
“Through the generous support of the Alumni Fund, we are now able to complete basic electronic and mechanical prototyping tasks on campus. This has greatly helped our efficiency in building the vehicle as well as supporting the society's social aspect, as it provides a common space for members to spend time together.”
